Johnny Lewis

Background

Johnny’s interest in radio goes back to his school days when he started listening to Radio Caroline. After leaving school He was a farmer for a couple of years and in 1978 went out to the North Sea to help fix a generator on board the Radio Caroline ship. Due to seasickness by another presenter, he was asked to step in and so began his career in broadcasting.

In 1980 after the Mi Amigo (Radio Caroline) sank Johnny joined The Voice of Peace radio station broadcasting pop music to The Middle East on a ship off Tel Aviv,

Then from 1981 he moved to Ireland to work on a number of stations including Sunshine Radio and Radio Nova in Dublin, and Corks South Coast Radio.

It was Back to sea in the mid 80s to help in the set up of Laser 730 later Laser 558, and rejoining Radio Caroline aboard it’s new ship Ross Revenge, as well as when on shore leave presenting on ABC Radio in Waterford.

After receiving several offers of jobs from British Local Radio in 1987 Johnny joined the ILR station for Hereford and Worcester, Radio Wyvern  he has also been programme controller of Kent-based station Invicta FM  and also presented on the station.

Since 1998 he has been broadcasting on the kmfm network, and was one of the first presenters on what was then TLR 107.2. He presented weekday breakfast on kmfm for almost 10 years.

Johnny still present’s programmes on Radio Caroline, both on the ship and onshore, now that the station is fully licensed to broadcast.

Johnny’s other interests including golf, walking and fund raising for the RNLI. He also gives after dinner speeches on offshore radio, loves to listen to soft rock and soul and says his fantasy date would be Sandra Bullock! Johnny is also an expert on beer (especially drinking it) but promises not to spill any on the CD players!
